It wasn’t too long ago we showed you a monitor from ViewSonic that doubled as a sort of pseudo Android desktop. Well, it’s looking like that might be the start of a trend with Motorola introducing a similar setup with the Cloud BB HMC3260. Before you get too excited, let’s talk a little bit about the specs (or lack there of).
- 18-inch 1366×768 touch screen LCD display
- 1GHz Freescale i.MX53 ARM Cortex A8 CPU
- 1GB of RAM
- 4GB internal storage
- Custom desktop launcher
- Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread
Sounds a bit… underpowered, don’tcha think? I have mixed feelings seeing OEM’s force Android into the desktop space. While I’m sure this is something Google has planned down the road, I don’t feel like the OS is quite there yet. No word on pricing or availability on the Cloud BB HMC3260 but it’s looking like this one if China-only (don’t act disappointed).

IMHO the android Tablet UI is a better ‘desktop’ OS than ChromeOS, so i’m all for an android desktop. but seriously, GINGERBREAD? this thing would be somewhat impressive around the era of the OG Galaxy tab (the froyo one), but in this day/age, its a bad joke. and to see it coming from motorola? WFT?!?
I have a feeling this will be more expensive than the $400 ViewSonic touchscreen desktop too =/
I hear you. I don’t understand why they would go with GB. JB would be a much better choice, though the project likely started before JB was out. This seems to have some outdated specs for a “desktop” device.
Maybe JB needs better specs?
I actually have a JB ROM running on a captivate right now. If you build it right, it will work.
It’s strange because the OS itself is free
From what I understand, ICS+ requires a GPU. That you have. But if this is so cheap that there’s no gpu then GB is the only way to go.
Its call scamming the consumer. They know very well what they’re doing.
Motorola in the Android to desktop world is ahead with their laptop dock setup. But still this is an iffy jump
one problem with that though – they’re killing off the lapdock >_<
The company really ahead is Asus with their combo devices aka the Transformer series and the 3 in 1 Padphone.
I still don’t see why Google hasn’t had Moto making Chromebooks from the start… Anyone care to explain? Seriously, I haven’t a clue.
Companies will try all kinds of crazy things in China. I guess the idea is to have a really really cheap computer that’s still easy to use (no linux installation nonsense).
I agree w/ ari_free,as this was either not destined for the North American or European markets, or, the idea was in development long before Honeycomb/ICS/JB were released.
We may still see something like this in the future, hopefully more easily upgradable than most handsets. Perhaps it’s why we’re seeing the LAPDOCK program fade into the sunset.
I think it’s just as dumb as the lapdock and Asus has a better idea with the transformer.
