As Google continues to steamroll through with its upcoming Android 16 launch, it looks like the second developer preview for Android’s next major upgrade is finally here, which comes with a ton of updates for both developers and users enrolled in the Android 16 preview program.
As such, new under-the-hood features now make their way to Android 16’s second dev preview. Google has now added System Triggered Profiling which helps capture challenging trace scenarios such as startups or ANRs, getStartComponent() which can be helpful for optimizing the startup flow an app, as well as improved haptic APIs that allow apps to specifically define the amplitude and frequency curves of a haptic effect.
Also included are Job Scheduler which offers enhanced introspection and optimized execution while deprecating outdated methods, improvements to accessibility via deprecating disruptive announcements and promoting alternative approaches, cloud search capabilities for the Photo Picker, and new benefits to WiFi Location via enhanced security with 802.11az support.
Finally, Health Connect now introduces the ACTIVITY_INTENSITY data type and supports FHIR format for medical records, and new APIs for predictive back gestures enable customizable back-to-home animations and task management.
Google says that it’s planning to launch Android 16 by Q2 2025, so it looks like we’re getting it much earlier than usual. By comparison, previous Android versions usually arrived in the Fall around September or October.
