Google Maps Timeline is a fun little feature. It was originally known as Location History. Basically, it shows users all the places that they’ve been while using Google Maps. It’s a great way of taking a trip down memory lane. Google has recently confirmed that the feature is shutting down in 2025, so if you want to save your Timeline data, here’s how.
How to save Timeline data
- Make sure you’re running the latest version of Google Maps on your phone
- Launch Google Maps on the Android device you want to save your Timeline data to
- Tap the You tab at the bottom of the app
- Select Explore Timeline
- You’ll get a prompt informing you of the upcoming change
- Tap Next
- Choose how many months of Timeline data you want to keep
- You will also have the option of continuing to send user data to Google. At this point it’s entirely up to you
- Tap Done and you should be all set
When will Timeline shut down?
According to Google’s recent emails, the company has confirmed that Timeline will shut down on the 9th of June, 2025. This means that there’s still plenty of time for you to save your Timeline data. Maybe there are some nostalgic locations and trips that you’ve made over the years that you’d like to preserve, so now’s a good time to do so.
What will happen?
While Timeline is shutting down, take note that the feature isn’t going away entirely. Google is instead moving from a cloud-based service to a device-specific service. This is to ensure a greater degree of privacy so that your data cannot be accessed by anyone else except for you.
