Pixel 6 owners, rejoice – while it was initially believed that Google’s 2021 flagship series phones will get their final Android upgrade by way of Android 15, it looks like that the Pixel 6 series will also receive next year’s Android 16 upgrade, based on new evidence.
READ: The first developer preview of Android 16 is here!
Following the release of the initial developer preview for Android 16, it seems that the Pixel 6 is still included among the list of the devices that are compatible with the dev preview. With that in mind, this could mean that the device will be compatible once Android 16 rolls out. It’s important to note though that at this point there’s no official word from Google that this is indeed the case.
This does contradict Google’s aforementioned support guidelines for the Pixel 6, which was originally scheduled to get its final major software update back in October. Launched three years ago, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro were originally scheduled for three years of major Android updates, and up to five years of security patches. It should be noted however that Google tends to give older smartphones surprise updates every now and then.
As for the Pixel 6a, Google’s update guidelines state that the phone will receive software updates until July 2025, which is well within the predicted launch window for Android 16. In any case, Pixel 6 users should keep a close eye out for future updates, especially if they’re running the dev preview.
