Google could be merging Chrome OS into Android
Google’s Chrome OS and Android are two separate platforms. Chrome OS focuses more on computers like laptops and to a certain extent tablets, while Android is more towards mobile like smartphones. But now a new report suggests that Google could be looking to migrate Chrome OS to Android to create a more unified system.
This is according to a recent article on Android Authority where they quote a source within Google. According to the report, Google is apparently working on a multi-year project that will essentially transform Chrome OS into Android and create a more unified platform that could potentially allow them to better compete with devices like the iPad.
As it stands, neither Chrome OS nor Android are particularly perfect platforms when it comes to tablets. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but if they were to merge with each other, it could create a platform that could finally give Apple a run for their money. That being said, this isn’t the first time Google has hinted at such plans.
Earlier this year, the company said that they plan to make Chrome OS “more like” Android. However, this report suggests that these changes could be bigger than we thought or than Google let on. This means that in the future, new Chromebooks could end up shipping with a new desktop-like variant of Android instead of Chrome OS.
This could be huge as it could introduce better synchronization across Chromebook computers and Android devices. It would also mean that more apps on Android can now run on Chromebooks, and developers won’t have to divide their resources into developing apps for Android and Chrome OS. Since this is a multi-year project, we probably shouldn’t expect to see all these changes anytime soon.
