Following complaints regarding safety features for its younger users, Roblox recently announced that it will be making some changes for communication restriction and parental controls. The changes will take place as soon as possible, and will roll out for more users over the next few months.
This includes disabling private message features for users under 13 years of age with other users outside select games and experiences. While kids will be able to see public messages, they’ll need parental permission to message other users on the platform. Parents will also be able to keep an eye on their kids’ Roblox usage and settings all from their own devices.
Parents will also receive push notifications whenever their kids want to ask permission, such as when joining an experience with a higher maturity rating.
Since its inception, Roblox has gained a huge user base – mostly among the younger crowd – while providing users with what is essentially a free MMO-styled game. The platform has since evolved to allow users to create their own games within the platform, alongside the addition of optional purchases.
With that said however, Roblox’s existence hasn’t been without controversy – recent reports from Bloomberg indicate that the platform has had a problem with younger players being targeted by abuse (and in some cases, abduction). This has little doubt contributed to the revamped parental controls and communication restrictions.
