When Apple officially announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, the company also revealed a partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. ChatGPT will be used to help answer more complex questions that Apple Intelligence cannot handle. But for those hoping for alternatives, like Google’s Gemini, it seems that it might only arrive for Apple Intelligence next year.
This is according to the latest issue of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter. According to Gurman, he expects that Apple will probably give OpenAI a period of exclusivity. This means that as far as other AI integrations are concerned, like Gemini, it will most likely only arrive in 2025.
“Other future improvements include an integration with Google Gemini. But Apple will probably give OpenAI a nice window of exclusivity, especially since it isn’t exactly paying for the technology. So I wouldn’t expect the Gemini chatbot to arrive in iOS until next year.”
We can’t say we’re too surprised. Apple started to roll out Apple Intelligence in the recent release of iOS 18.1. The company did state that they do plan to roll out more Apple Intelligence features over the next few updates going into 2025, so for Gemini support to arrive in 2025 isn’t a complete shock.
For those who want to use Gemini on their iPhones, there is an alternative. Google recently released its standalone Gemini app for iOS devices, so those who want Gemini can always access it that way. Either way, hopefully we’ll have more official details from Apple and Google in the near future.
