Apple’s long-rumored TV could be back on the table

Many years ago, following the release of Walter Isaacson’s biography on late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, there was a paragraph in the book. The paragraph seemingly quoted Jobs as saying that he had “cracked” the idea of creating a TV set. This led to rumors that such a device could be in the works, but it never materialized. Now it looks like we could be getting a second chance.

In the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman is claiming that Apple is now “evaluating” the idea of an Apple-branded TV set. Note that the words Gurman chose says that Apple is evaluating the idea, as opposed to actually working on it. The report goes on to suggest that this evaluation is still in the early stages. This means that there’s always a chance it could get shelved.

According to Gurman, the idea of an Apple-branded TV could be part of Apple’s plan to release a lineup of smart home products. As it stands, the only smart home product from Apple is the HomePod and HomePod Mini. There was a recent report that Apple could be looking to expand that lineup with a new smart display, and this rumored TV could also be part of that list.

It will be interesting to see Apple tackle the idea of a TV. There are many TV brands out there that have their own smart features, so we’re not sure what Apple could bring to the table that other TV makers haven’t already. Either way, since nothing has been confirmed, you should probably take this with a grain of salt for now.
