While it’s safe to say that tablet devices didn’t really “disappear,” we’re at a considerable point in time where their popularity has somewhat waned in comparison to a decade ago. On the other hand, recent figures show that tablets are making a comeback of sorts, with Apple maintaining its lead.
New data from market research firm Canalys shows that worldwide tablet shipments have increased by 11% year on year in Q3 2024, with a total of 37.4 million units. Canalys says that this is the third consecutive quarter of growth, mostly due to demand within consumer and commercial sectors. This also includes seasonal demand for returning students in schools, IT business spending, as well as the incoming holiday season.
Maintaining the lead is Apple with 36.3% market share, which recently launched its new seventh-generation iPad Mini. Samsung is in second place with 18.4%, with Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi following behind with considerably less marketshare. Canalys Research Manager Himani Mukka comments:
