It looks like the Indonesian government has continued to tighten its grip with regards to foreign smartphone sales – following the ban of iPhone 16 handsets in the country, it looks like Google Pixel phones have also been included in Indonesia’s banned smartphone sales list.
As with the iPhone 16, the Indonesian government cites the same reason for its ban on Pixel devices, alleging that Google failed to provide “40% local content” with its devices. A local official states that around 22,000 Pixel devices were already imported into Indonesia, either as carry-on items or through personal purchases.

With that said, some speculate that the recent decision to ban Pixel and iPhone devices ties into a move to secure bigger investments from international companies.
The country’s laws state that 40% local content must be provided via locally-manufactured products, or through locally-developed software and R&D facilities. With that said, Pixel devices aren’t “officially” sold within Indonesia, with most buyers purchasing them via third-party retailers.
