OpenAI Wants to Take on Google’s Biggest Feature

Google’s long-reigning dominance as the go-to search platform for countless users the world over has been the status quo for pretty much the past few decades. This is something that OpenAI wants to change however, following the introduction of a new search feature for ChatGPT.

Built into ChatGPT itself, the search feature reduces the need to access a dedicated search engine, allowing users to get answers to their queries, both based on what a user asks or via a manual web search. ChatGPT Search arrives today for ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as SearchGPT waitlist users, while Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the coming weeks. Free users will have to wait a few more months for the feature though.

Since search results are accessible via a conversational manner, chat responses will include links to sources. Part of OpenAI’s announcement reads:

ChatGPT search connects people with original, high-quality content from the web and makes it part of their conversation. By integrating search with a chat interface, users can engage with information in a new way, while content owners gain new opportunities to reach a broader audience. We hope to help users discover publishers and websites, while bringing more choice to search.
