Huawei Finally Breaks Free of Android’s Grip

While it’s been quite a number of years now since the fallout between Huawei and the United States Government (with Google also involved), Huawei’s move to fully drop Android as the backbone of its smartphone software platform took a bit of time. While Huawei’s HarmonyOS initially ran on a modified version of Android, it seems that this is no longer the case moving forward.

More specifically, it looks like Huawei has finally launched a more fleshed-out version of HarmonyOS NEXT, which was initially unveiled last year. The new OS completely drops Android and AOSP codes, and comes with support for around 15,000 apps. HarmonyOS NEXT initially became available to the public via a beta earlier this month.

As for which devices are supported, HarmonyOS Next is coming to a wide range of Huawei devices, including the Mate 60, Mate X5, Mate 60 Pro+, Mate X5 Collector’s Edition, Mate 60 Pro, Pura 70, Mate 60 RS ULTIMATE DESIGN, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Ultra, Pura 70 Pro+, Pocket 2, Pocket 2 Art Edition, MatePad Pro 13.2-inch, MatePad Pro 13.2-inch Collector’s Edition, MatePad Pro 11-inch 2024 model, and Watch Ultimate.

Huawei adds that more devices will receive the update by next year.
