Android 15 is Finally Live – Here’s What it Brings!

It’s that time of the year once again – Google has finally rolled out the latest major Android upgrade for 2024, in the form of Android 15. The update arrives first for Pixel devices, and there’s a lot of tasty new features to look forward to. Let’s check them out!

Data Protection

Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of Android 15 is Theft Detection, which according to Google uses AI-based detection to determine when a device has been snatched from a user’s hands. The feature then automatically locks the device, and users can then use Remote Lock to keep their phone and data secure. Additionally, thieves will have to go through new authentication requirements to reduce the likelihood of resetting a device to sell, for example.

Android 15 also brings over a new “Private space” feature that lets users create a separate private space for sensitive apps, which locks away apps and keeps them hidden from other users. Private space itself can be hidden from view on a user’s device, and other users will need extra authentication steps in order to access a device’s Private space.

Productivity Features

Android 15 also comes with some much-welcome optimizations for larger-screened devices including foldables and tablets, allowing users to pin/unpin the taskbar on their screen and paving the way for a more flexible approach to organizing their layouts for easy access.

App pairing is now accessible via a shortcut for easier multitasking, and users can now open Google Drive and Gmail at the same time for easy drag and drop actions. Users can even save app combinations which can be brought up via a single icon on their device, reducing the time needed to initiate a split-screen setup.

In addition to all of this, Google has also added low-light boost and in-app camera controls for low-light scenarios, and third-party apps will have better camera control access as well. Carrier messaging apps will be able to tap into satellite connectivity to send and receive messages, and users can now log into Passkey apps with a single tap.
