ChatGPT might double in price by 2029

OpenAI’s ChatGPT has several versions available to users. One of which is free, which for the most part gets the job done. Then there is a premium version that requires a subscription that offers additional features, bandwidth priority, and more. But now a new report suggests that the price of the premium offering of ChatGPT could more than double by 2029.

This is according to a report from The New York Times who cites internal OpenAI documents that suggests that we could be looking at price hikes over the next 5 years. At the moment, the price of an individual ChatGPT subscription costs $20 a month. However, that price could go up by $2 to $22 a month by the end of the year.

It also goes on to suggest that over the next five years, OpenAI could increase the price of its AI services where by 2029, it could cost customers $44 a month. The goal of the price increase is to help OpenAI cover its losses. The company reportedly reached $300 million in annual revenue in August, but they are still expected to see $5 billion in losses this year.

We get that costs like training AI, running data farms, and so on can get expensive. But $44 a month does seem to be a bit too expensive for regular folks. In fact, even at $20 there are many who already find that expensive, so we imagine that doubling up those prices could drive away customers.
