Samsung still thinks 3D is cool with its new Odyssey glasses-free 3D monitor

For a very brief period of time, glasses-free 3D displays were a thing. We saw some handset makers attempt to make it popular, but the most successful device we’ve seen that implemented the technology was the Nintendo 3DS. Since then, the hype has pretty much died off. But Samsung is looking to revive it with its new glasses-free 3D Odyssey gaming monitor.

The Samsung Odyssey 3D was unveiled during Gamescom 2024. This particular monitor uses a lenticular lens on the front panel. Combined with the light field display, it basically creates 3D images from existing 2D content. This means that users don’t need to seek out content specifically made for 3D.

It also uses Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology, which creates a more optimized experience without the need for cumbersome 3D glasses. Users who prefer using the display in 2D can do so, but that kind of defeats the point of the display to begin with. Other specs of the display you might be interested in include a 4K resolution, a 1ms response time, a refresh rate of 165Hz, support for AMD FreeSync Premium, and one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports.

It is available in either a 27-inch or 37-inch size. Pricing of the display was not mentioned but Samsung says it should be available later this year.
