Veteran Game Studio Shutdown by Meta
In an internal memo to employees, Meta recently announced that it will permanently close Ready at Dawn Studios (part of its Oculus Studios), encouraging employees to apply to other branches under Oculus Studios. This follows reports of upcoming budget cuts to Meta’s Reality Labs division.
Ready at Dawn was responsible for several well-received VR games, including titles like the Lone Echo series. Earlier on, the studio also worked on Sony exclusives for the PSP, including the God of War and Daxter franchises. The studio has been a part of Oculus Studios since 2020. Meta clarified that the closure isn’t a sign of more cuts to its first-party games on Quest, and that the company is still working on VR development.
A Meta representative states that the cuts weren’t done to save money, but are instead made to ensure that Reality Labs “stays within the new budgetary constraints.” As for layoffs, Meta explains that Ready at Dawn’s shutdown isn’t enough to fall within the California WARN Act, which requires companies to give their employees an advanced notice if more than 50 employees are laid off in a 30-day period.
