The PS5 has been Selling Less, Sony Says

Despite being one of the most popular video game console in recent years, the PlayStation 5 has seen a significant drop in sales this year. According to Sony’s latest financial reports for Q1 2024, the console has only sold 2.4 million units for the quarter, which is 27% less compared to the 3.3 million consoles sold during the same period last year.

On the other hand, Sony remains positive overall and says that Q1 sales for its Games and Network Services section saw a 32% increase in operating income, with 80% of the 53.6 million PS5 game sales in Q1 being digital purchases. Sony adds that software sales have resulted in $3.30 billion in revenue, although hardware revenue did decline by 21% or $990 million.

The company says that it has 116 million registered monthly active users, an increase when compared to 108 million last year, but an overall decrease from the 118 million reported in Q4 2023. At this point, the PS5 has reached 61.7 million lifetime sales.

The PS5 isn’t the only console to have seen a decline in recent sales – Nintendo also reports that its overall financial performance dropped during the first quarter of the fiscal year, following a sharp decline of Switch sales. Nintendo reported a 71% drop in operating profit to ¥54.5 billion ($365 million), with Switch sales falling nearly 50% to just 2.1 million units during the April-June period.
