Veteran video game publication Game Informer recently announced that it will be shutting down all operations immediately following an announcement made on its social media pages. The shutdown was also confirmed by several writers and staff, who tweeted out posts regarding the news. As per Game Informer’s official post:
After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer. From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion we have for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on. Thank you for being part of our epic quest, and may your own gaming adventures never end.
With that being said, it seems that Game Informer staff were likewise caught unaware by the sudden shutdown, with Gamestop giving no announcements prior. Some staff noted that they were in the middle of working on the July issue, giving more context to the abrupt closure of the site. Kyle Hilliard, content director comments:
Game Informer has been closed down by GameStop and the entire, incredibly talented staff (including myself) have all been laid off. A frustrating turn of events (especially considering we were about 70% done with the next issue and it was going to have a GREAT cover).
Game Informer started out with video game coverage in the early 90s via print, and grew to be one of the best-selling magazine publications in North America. As with a lot of other legacy publications, GI eventually transitioned to online publishing, and was eventually acquired by Gamestop. At the moment, any attempts to access the site automatically redirects users to the closure announcement.
