The Tensor G4 might not be the huge upgrade we were hoping for
Google’s Pixel 9 series will be launching soon. The handset is expected to be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, but it seems that it might be a particularly huge upgrade. This is according to a report from Android Authority who revealed some potential specs of the chipset.
According to the publication, they were tipped by an unnamed Google insider. Their source claims that the Tensor G4 will feature “slightly higher” clock speeds compared to the Tensor G3. It will also utilize a 4+3+1 configuration, which is one less core compared to its predecessor.
This suggests that the Tensor G4 won’t provide a huge upgrade over the G3, which is kind of disappointing. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about this. Back in June, leaked benchmarks hinted at the G4’s sub-par performance compared to competing chipsets. That being said, it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
While it won’t be a huge improvement over the G3, those coming from the Pixel 7 or older, or other older Android handsets, could still benefit from the improvements. The Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 series is the one that we’re more looking forward to. This chipset is said to be the first truly custom chipset from Google and is expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process.
