Spotify CEO confirms a new higher-end tier is in the works

0

For years we’ve been hearing that Spotify could be readying a new higher-end tier for users who want to be able to stream hi-fi music from the platform. The company hasn’t launched anything yet, but at least we know it’s real. This is according to Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, who confirmed it during the company’s earnings call.

Before all you audiophiles get too excited, we could be in for a wait. According to Ek, apparently the new tier is still “in early days”. It’s kind of strange why Spotify is taking this long, but perhaps the infrastructure still isn’t ready yet or maybe they are still negotiating with the record labels and music publishers.

Also, you might want to get your wallets ready. While Ek hasn’t directly confirmed how much it will cost, he suggests that it could be anywhere around $17 or $18. This is in line with an earlier Bloomberg report. Ek justifies the price by suggesting that this tier could come with additional features apart from the higher quality streams.

It will be interesting to see who might be interested in signing up for this higher-end tier on Spotify. Tidal attempted to create a more expensive tier back in the day, only to eventually cave in. Spotify’s more immediate competitor, Apple, already offers a lossless stream at no additional cost.
