Here’s why Samsung is Moving Forward with its Google Messages Switch

Samsung’s penchant for giving users duplicate apps on its Galaxy smartphones has long been talked about among tech circles online. With that said though, it looks like things might be changing a bit, at least based on recent developments from Samsung.

More specifically, Samsung recently announced that it will be switching to Google Messages as the default messaging app on its smartphones, ditching Samsung Messages which was a staple on past devices. Speaking to the folks over at Android Authority, a Samsung spokesperson gave more insight regarding the switch:

Samsung and Google have been closely working together on many communication service areas and this collaborative effort to make Google Messages the default common messaging platform for the Android mobile ecosystem will accelerate the adoption of Rich Communication Services (RCS) and deliver a more robust and engaging mobile messaging experience to Galaxy users.

RCS has been a lot in tech headlines lately, especially with Apple’s decision to finally include support for RCS with iOS 18. Going back to Samsung though, it should be noted that the switch to Google Messages will initially be exclusive for users in the United States, so it might be a while before we see a more expansive switch worldwide.
