Qualcomm is typically viewed as the more “premium” chipset supplier. The majority of high-end flagship phones out there today are powered by Qualcomm’s hardware. But that narrative could change soon, especially with alleged benchmarks of the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 proving it has what it takes.
According to a post on Weibo by tipster Digital Chat Station, it seems that the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 managed to score about 1.7-1.8 million on an AnTuTu benchmark test. For context, this is on par with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 which also scored 1.7 million. What’s interesting is that Dimensity 8400 isn’t even a flagship chipset.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 series are the company’s flagship series. This means that a mid-range chipset managed to achieve a similar level of performance as Qualcomm’s more expensive, flagship model! We can’t speak as to whether or not these benchmark scores are accurate or the real deal, so take it with a grain of salt. But if they are, Qualcomm needs to be worried.
We’ve been hearing rumors that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could be even more expensive. This means that companies might start looking for alternatives. If these benchmark scores are real, MediaTek could be a legitimate alternative. Hopefully MediaTek will have more details to share later this year.
