Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 versus Motorola Razr (2024)
If you’re looking for a clamshell foldable smartphone, there are many options available today. In fact, this year saw the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Motorola Razr (2024). But how do the phones compare against each other? In this article, we’ll take a look at both the Flip 6 and 2024 Razr and see how they fare versus each other.
Design
The design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is similar to its predecessor to a certain extent. It is updated with flatter sides, but otherwise the overall design language isn’t too different. For instance, the external display still uses a notch (which we’ll get to in the next section). The Razr (2024) does offer new colors but still uses a textured material for the body of the phone. It did get an upgrade in the display department which we’ll touch on later.
In terms of size, unfolded the Flip 6 measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm versus the Razr (2024) which comes in at 171.3 x 74 x 7.3 mm. When folded shut, the Flip 6 measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm while the Razr (2024) measures 88.1 x 74 x 15.9 mm. The Flip 6 also weighs 187 grams while the Razr (2024) weighs 188.4 grams.
Based on this, the Flip 6 is thinner, smaller, and marginally lighter than Motorola’s foldable. The difference in weight is negligible, but the difference in size is different enough for those who might want to put their phones in their bags or slip it into a pocket.
Display
In the display department, we can see why the Razr (2024) is bigger versus the Flip 6. It has a larger 6.9-inch foldable display, while the Flip 6 has a 6.7-inch screen. Both displays use an LTPO AMOLED panel and support refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The Razr (2024) is also brighter at a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, while the Flip 6 caps out at 2,600 nits.
This is important if you want to reduce glare in direct sunlight. Both phones also have similar resolutions of 1080×2640, although the Flip 6 has a higher pixel density of 426 PPI, not that you can really tell.
As for the external display, as we previously mentioned, the Flip 6 still has a notch that kind of cuts off the display near the camera section. Overall, the Flip 6’s external display is 3.4-inches, making it slightly smaller than the Razr (2024) which has a 3.6-inch external display.
One thing to note is that with the Razr (2024), Motorola finally introduced a larger external display. The previous model only had a 1.5-inch external display, so this is actually quite a huge upgrade.
Performance
Performance is another area that both phones differ quite significantly. Unlike the Razr+ (2024), the Razr (2024) uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7300X chipset. This is versus the Flip 6 which is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Dimensity 7000 series are a a mid-range chipset, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the latest and greatest Qualcomm has to offer.
This will have a huge impact in terms of performance for things like gaming. The Flip 6 also comes wtih 12GB of RAM, while the Razr (2024) only comes with 8GB. On paper the Flip 6 absolutely destroys the Razr (2024), but depending on what you use your phone mainly for, it might not be as big a deal for some.
Another important thing to note is that the storage of the Flip 6 uses UFS 4.0 versus the Razr (2024) which is UFS 2.2. The difference in speeds when it comes to reading and writing files could be more obvious here, but like we said, it depends on what you do with your phone.
Cameras
The cameras on both phones are near identical. Both handsets use a dual camera setup. The Flip 6 does have an upgraded main camera of 50MP compared to its predecessor. This is similar to the Razr (2024) which also has a 50MP main, although the Razr has a wider f/1.7 aperture while the Flip 6 is f/1.8.
The Flip 6’s secondary camera is a 12MP ultrawide with an aperture of f/2.2. The Razr (2024), on the other hand, has a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide. The difference of 1MP shouldn’t make a huge difference, so we’ll call it a draw. On the front, the Flip 6 still uses a measly 10MP camera, while the Razr (2024) packs a 32MP selfie cam.
We did mention before that due to the foldable design of clamshell phones, it’s pretty easy to use the main cameras for selfies if you want a higher resolution.
Battery
Last but not least, let’s take a look at battery life. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 features a 4,000mAh battery with 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. The Razr (2024) has a slightly larger 4,200mAh battery and it charges faster at 30W wired, but wireless is the same at 15W.
The difference of 200mAh should make some difference, but then again, it depends on how you use your phone. It also depends on the software optimization both manufacturers have made.
Pricing & availability
The pricing difference between both phones is quite stark. The Flip 6 is priced at $1,099, versus the Razr (2024) which is priced at $699. Obviously both phones are quite different in terms of specs. The Flip 6 is more powerful and uses higher-end hardware, while the Razr (2024) is more of a mid-range model. However, the difference in price is big enough where if you don’t need to have the latest and most powerful hardware, the Motorola Razr (2024) could be a more value for money smartphone.
