The Switch Now Holds the Record for Nintendo’s Longest Running Console
The Switch’s reign as one of Nintendo’s most successful video game consoles continues – most recently, the hybrid handheld console set a record for the longest-running console from the Big N, overtaking the previous record set by the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) without being replaced, according to new data.
The Switch has now lasted 2,688 days – that’s more than seven years – without being replaced by a next-gen successor. As mentioned earlier, the NES held the record with its 2,686 day count before its successor (the Super Nintendo Entertainment System) came around to replace it.
While anticipation for the next-generation Switch continues to run high, there’s still no solid launch date for Nintendo’s Switch successor. With that said though, many are predicting that we’ll get a formal announcement of sorts either in late 2024, or early 2025.
Just recently, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the company plans to combat scalpers by producing enough Switch units to meet demand. He also noted that problems involving semiconductor shortages from a while back were no longer an issue, meaning that Nintendo can manufacture more consoles this time around.
