Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 versus Galaxy Z Flip 5

Samsung just announced its latest flip foldable – the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The Flip series is the most popular device amongst Samsung’s foldables. There are several reasons why. One of those is price, where it is cheaper compared to its larger Fold sibling. Secondly, it is also smaller, but how does it stack against its predecessor? Let’s see how it fares in the Galaxy Z Flip 6 versus the Flip 5!

Design

Design wise, both phones look near-identical. Is this a bad thing? It depends on your preference. If you like the Samsung design language then it is a good thing, but if you’re hoping for something different, it might be disappointing. There are some subtle differences between both phones.

This includes the sides/edges of the Flip 6 which are flatter versus the Flip 5, which are slightly more curvy. If you prefer this aesthetic, then maybe the design of the Flip 6 is a better choice over its predecessor. Other than that, like we said, it remains more or less the same.

Display

In terms of display, both phones are once again identical. Both the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Flip 5 feature the same foldable 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Both displays will also support HDR10+ and have the same 1080×2640 resolution. The main difference is its brightness. The Flip 6 has a higher peak brightness of 2,600 nits, versus the Flip 5 which has a peak brightness of 1,750 nits.

The outer display is also the same. Both displays measure 3.4-inches and use a Super AMOLED panel with a 720×748 resolution. They also use the same Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. We had previously heard rumors that the Flip 6’s external display could be downgraded to LCD, but thankfully those rumors weren’t true.

Performance

If all the differences haven’t been particularly obvious, then performance is where the differences between both phones will become more apparent. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, while the Flip 6 uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Both chipsets are built on the 4nm process, but the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 uses newer and faster cores.

This includes a 1×3.3 GHz Cortex-X4 & 3×3.2 GHz Cortex-A720 & 2×3.0 GHz Cortex-A720 & 2×2.3 GHz Cortex-A520, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s configuration is 1×3.36 GHz Cortex-X3 & 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A715 & 2×2.8 GHz Cortex-A710 & 3×2.0 GHz Cortex-A510. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 also uses the Adreno 750, while the Gen 2 uses an Adreno 740 GPU.

There is an increase in RAM as well, where the Flip 6 starts with 12GB of RAM versus the Flip 5 which has 8GB of RAM.

Cameras

Samsung’s foldables aren’t exactly known for their cameras. They do shoot decent photos, but it’s really nothing to shout about. Samsung seems to have made an effort at improving that. The Flip 6 features a 50MP f/1.8 main shooter, an upgrade over the Flip 5’s 12MP shooter.

The accompanying 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide seems to have remained the same, along with the 10MP f/2.2 front-facing camera. We’re not sure if an increase in megapixels will offer significant gains in quality, but at least it’s no longer the paltry 12MP from before.

Battery

Samsung has given the Flip 6 an upgrade in the battery department. It now packs a 4,000mAh battery while the Flip 5 came with a 3,700mAh battery. Apart from the increase in battery size, both phones still charge at 25W wired, but the Flip 6 does support QC 2.0 which Samsung claims will boost it to 50% in just 30 minutes. Both phones will also retain the same 15W wireless charging speeds and support 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

Price

Here’s where it gets interesting. The Flip 5 is priced starting at $999, versus the Flip 6 which saw an increase in price to $1,099. This is about $100 more expensive, but we suppose the upgrade in hardware, RAM, and battery could have played a role.

One thing to note is that Samsung is running a pre-order deal for the Flip 6 where you get a free storage upgrade to 512GB. You also get enhanced trade-in which can lower the price of the phone if you have an eligible device. If you pre-order from Amazon, you can also get a $200 Amazon Gift Card, which you can kind of think of as a $200 discount.

On the other hand, with the Flip 6 being announced, the Flip 5 should see a drop in price. Retailers might offer deeper discounts to clear out existing inventory, so you might be able to pick one up at a considerably cheaper price.
