The Official Google Case for the Pixel 8a is Actually Nice

0

If you own the Google Pixel 8a (or maybe you’re thinking of getting one), then you might want to add some protection to your phone by way of a case, which has become the norm these days when it comes to owning and using smartphones. While the phone features an IP67 rating, Gorilla Glass 3, and a matte finish, there’s always a risk of accidentally dropping or scratching your device.

Luckily, there’s a wide range of Pixel 8a cases out there from third-party brands which feature different styles and levels of protection. It should be noted though that Google does sell its own line of accessories for the Pixel 8a, which includes an official case which is probably the more minimalist ones that we’ve seen so far. Let’s see what it’s like!

Design and Fit

The Google case comes in black with a smooth matte finish, similar to last year’s Pixel cases. It’s a single-piece design with an inner frame for structure and a silicone rubber exterior, which feels a bit smooth but with slightly less of a “sticky” feel than previous cases. The back features the Google “G” logo and cutouts for the camera and charging port, which is more accessible this time around as it features an open cutout.

Speaking of cutouts, the case does a great job of highlighting the Pixel 8a’s camera window, which most cases tend to hide – although of course this does mean that the camera is more prone to scratches if you’re not careful. Installation is simple, and once you pop your phone in there, the case fits snugly around the Pixel 8a.

Protection and Functionality

The case is slim overall, and adds minimal thickness while maintaining the Pixel 8a’s slim profile. The buttons are covered although it should be noted that they are slightly stiffer to press, but remain usable. Wireless charging likewise still works, at least with the charger that we have on here.

The case does have a very minimal lip around the screen, so unless you’re using a screen protector, the Pixel 8a’s screen will touch most surfaces that you place it face down on. If you’re after something with more protection around the sides and screen, you might want to go with something a bit more rugged. While not a heavy-duty option though, the case offers improved grip and protects against scratches, bumps, and scuffs.

Is it Worth Getting?

The case costs around $20-$30, which is a factor to consider as other third-party cases are priced below 20 bucks. Overall, it’s a good choice for those seeking a minimalist case that preserves the Pixel 8a’s design while adding some a bit of protection, although it’s not meant for rugged scenarios which is something to keep in mind.
