It’s no secret that Apple is developing its own AI. The company’s CEO has confirmed as much. In fact, it would actually be more surprising if they weren’t, especially with their competitors like Microsoft, Samsung, and Google all having launched AI of their own. Now it looks like Apple could have given us a hint as to what’s to come.
According to a report from VentureBeat, they have come across a research paper published by Apple researchers on a new AI system called ReALM. This is short for Reference Resolution As Language Modeling that uses large language models for reference resolution. For those unfamiliar, reference resolution is basically the understanding of nouns/pronouns in context of something like a conversation.
For example, if you were asking your friend to pass you a drink from the counter, you would just point and say, “Could you pass me that?” This is because humans understand reference resolution, but an AI might not, and this ReALM system could address that pain point.
Apple’s ReALM system wants to solve that problem. It can help improve digital assistants by allowing the AI to understand what’s on the user’s screen without the user having to provide precise details or instructions. We wouldn’t be surprised if Apple were to introduce something similar to its own AI platform or even Siri later this year, but we’ll have to wait and see.
