Microsoft could be readying their MacBook killers
For the longest time ever, Intel’s x86 based processors were used to power desktops and laptops. For the most part, they are still the standard choice. But Apple turned things on its head when they launched the M1, proving that Arm-based chipsets had what it took to compete. Now it looks like Microsoft is getting to unveil the Windows answer to Apple’s MacBooks with Arm-based Surface computers.
The company has recently announced that they will be hosting an event on the 20th of May. This will be a closed event only for journalists, but it is expected that it will see Microsoft unveil new Arm-powered Surface computers. These devices are most likely powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.
This chipset was announced by Qualcomm back in 2023, and it looks like Microsoft will be taking advantage of them. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen an Arm-based Surface computer from Microsoft. Previously, the company used a custom Snapdragon chipset for its Surface tablets, but it never quite took off.
Technology has advanced a lot since, and with Apple helping to pave the way, perhaps these new Surface computers could be more viable. In addition to new Arm-based Surface computers, the May 20 event will also see Microsoft share their AI plans across both hardware and software. May 20 is still about two months away, so we’ll still have to wait a bit for the details.
