nubia Z60 Ultra: Taking a break from the norm

0

The nubia Z60 Ultra is one of the first few Android smartphones to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The handset launched in December 2023, putting it well ahead of the competition like the Samsung Galaxy S24.

If you’re looking for a flagship level smartphone that offers a great design, high-end performance, a set of fantastic cameras, and the ability to game, then the nubia Z60 Ultra could definitely be worth your consideration. If you’re interested, then read on to find out more!

Bold and beautiful design

One of the standout features of the nubia Z60 Ultra has to be its design. It feels like a departure from the design of other smartphones we’ve seen over the years. To a certain extent, it kind of reminds us of a camera.

nubia has opted for a boxy design with sharp corners and flat sides. It might look simple, but we think that’s why it also looks so beautiful. There’s something understated about the simple design approach. The camera modules on the back of the phone also stand out in a good way.

There is a red ring circling one of the lenses which adds a nice pop of color. nubia has also included the use of an in-display front-facing camera. This results in a phone that looks pretty seamless from the front.

Flagship level performance

Keep in mind that this phone is a flagship level handset. As such, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that it packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This is the latest chipset from Qualcomm and it is also the company’s most powerful to date.

According to nubia, the use of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will offer gains of about 30% in CPU performance. We can also look forward to a 25% increase in GPU performance. This improvement in performance comes from the gains in efficiency. We’re talking about a 20% and 25% increase in both CPU and GPU efficiency respectively.

nubia is known for their gaming phones so the Z60 Ultra’s gaming capabilities are to be expected. It features an E-Sport System which features an AI engine. It also utilizes an aerospace grade cooling system.

This consists of a vapor chamber with diamond thermal conductive gel and a ten thousand level graphene sheet, as well as the use of superconductive nanometer carbon fiber. This means that gamers can look forward to playing games for extended periods of time and not worry about their phones overheating.

The use of this cooling system also means that the phone can continuously run without suffering performance issues as a result of overheating. The handset will be offered in 12GB or 16GB RAM variants, so depending on your needs, you’ll have options.

Last but not least, the handset is packing a massive 6,000mAh battery. The company claims that this offers up to 47 hours of battery life and a standby time of a little over 14 days.

Amazing cameras

With flagship phones all starting to look like one another, one way for handset makers to stand out is on the camera front. nubia has definitely paid a lot of attention to the cameras on the Z60 Ultra.

It consists of a triple setup with a 50MP main shooter with a 35mm focal length and an aperture of f/1.59 with OIS. It is accompanied by a wide 18mm 50MP camera with OIS and an aperture of f/1.8, and an 85mm 64MP OIS telephoto camera.

On paper it doesn’t sound too different, but that’s where the software features come in. The camera system on the handset is powered by the company’s NeoVision imaging system. Each camera has also been designed for specific purposes. For example, if you like taking portraits or street photography, the 35mm and 85mm cameras are a great choice. If you prefer landscapes or macro, the 18mm will be a good option.

nubia is also using a 1/1.55-inch sensor which is large enough for things like capturing star trails and the night sky. If you enjoy outdoor photography, especially at night, then the nubia Z60 Ultra won’t disappoint. In fact, the red ring circling one of the lenses isn’t just for decoration. It is a light adapting red circle that will help with better star trail tracking. The fact that it adds a pop of color to the phone is a nice bonus!

The company has also included a total of 12 starry sky algorithms for those who like astrophotography.

The front-facing shooter also does not disappoint. While it has a smaller 12MP sensor, nubia has designed it so that it hides under the display of the phone, creating a very seamless look. They have also improved the algorithms of the selfie cam with support for multi-frame RAW fusion, intelligent image quality enhancement, radiant natural beauty, and dark light scene optimization. Basically you should be able to expect some stunning selfies.

Stunning display

Smartphone display technology has kind of peaked. There’s really only so much companies can do these days. That doesn’t mean that all displays are the same. There are some phones where there are some subtle differences which can make a world of difference. The nubia Z60 Ultra’s display is one of them.

It features a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen with a 1116×2480 resolution. It also has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. But one of the standout features of the display is its touch sampling rate. The display has a touch sampling rate of 1200Hz peak, which means that it will be super responsive.

This is especially great for gaming, but non-gamers can probably appreciate it in their day-to-day use of the phone.

Pricing & availability

So, if you are interested in the nubia Z60 Ultra and think it could be your next flagship phone for the next few years, it is available for purchase from nubia’s website. It is priced starting at $649 for the base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. If you prefer having more RAM, the 16GB and 512GB model will cost $779. All in all, it’s a great value for money flagship phone, especially when you consider that there are more expensive smartphones out there.
