Following a massive company-wide restructuring and several studio shutdowns, it looks like Swedish media company Embracer Group isn’t done with the whole ordeal. More recently, the company laid off 97 employees from developer Eidos Montreal, including the cancellation of an unannounced Deus Ex game.
The cancelled game was reportedly two years into development, although it was never officially announced to the public. In a statement posted on its official social media page, Eidos Montreal commented:
“For the last 17 years, our teams at Eidos have worked on some of the most beloved brands in the industry, combining deep storytelling and innovation into unique games… The global economic context, the challenges of our industry and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer have finally impacted our studio. The difficult decision has been made to let go 97 people from development teams, administration, and support services.”
“We are working to support all impacted personnel through this transition. These very talented, highly experienced people are entering the employment market, and we want them to find their next projects and are helping to do so.”
With that being said, Eidos Montreal is the most recent game studio to be affected by Embracer’s restructuring operations, having previously shutdown other entities including Saints Row developer Volition, as well as Ree Radical Design, which was responsible for the Timesplitters franchise.
