Sony: “We will Expand our Gaming Experiences to PC, Mobile, and Cloud”

The gaming industry’s never-ending evolution has witnessed the arrival (and sometimes departure) of major tech trends, which more often than not have been integrated into everything from business practices, all the way down to how games are developed and marketed.

With that in mind, Sony’s position as one of the biggest names in the industry has allowed it to experiment with different hardware and software approaches to gaming, and it looks like the company is set on doubling-down on its efforts to evolve with the times. Speaking to Norges Bank Investment Management, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida recently commented on the future of gaming and PlayStation. He states:

“It will be ubiquitous… Wherever there is computing, users will be able to play their favorite games seamlessly. Why PlayStation will remain our core product [is] we will expand our gaming experiences to PC, mobile, and cloud.”

Yoshida also shared some thoughts on subscription-based gaming services, adding:

“People usually play one game at a time… So [the] all you can eat type of many games may not be so valuable compared with video streaming services. So we’ll have a kind of balanced or hybrid service on PlayStation Network: a subscription as well as pay-per-content.”

The rise of cloud gaming and game streaming services in recent years has allowed publishers and developers to reach more consumers who want to be able to access their favourite titles on different devices, or in situations where their main gaming hardware might not be available. However, the push to bring cloud gaming into mainstream adoption has not been an easy feat to accomplish, as shown by the demise of early efforts such as Google Stadia.
