Moto G Play (2024): The budget king is back

Back in the day, Motorola would compete with the other Android handset makers with their flagships. The company ultimately pivoted to the budget and mid-range sector and have been killing ever since. If you’re looking for an affordable and solid performing smartphone, the Moto G Play (2024) could be it.

The Moto G Play (2024) will be the successor to the 2023 model, but it looks like it has picked up some upgrades along the way. Motorola will be moving away from the use of MediaTek’s chipset. Instead, the company will be outfitting the Moto G Play with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset.

Motorola will also be relocating the fingerprint sensor. It was previously mounted on the back of the phone, but the 2024 model will move it to the side. This is a matter of personal preference, but we think a side-mounted fingerprint sensor feels more ergonomic.

The cameras on the new Moto G Play will be a huge departure from the previous model. The 2023 Moto G Play has a triple camera setup, but the 2024 model will be ditching all of that for a singular 50MP Quad Pixel module. This might be a hard sell in 2024 where dual or triple cameras are the standard, but maybe Motorola’s software can compensate for it.

There will also be certain things that remain the same. This includes the display. It will retain the same 6.5-inch HD+ screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. The 3.5mm headphone jack is still there, perfect for those who prefer wired audio, and the 5,000mAh battery. Motorola claims that users can look forward to up to 46 hours of battery life.

You can purchase the new Moto G Play starting on February 8th, and it starts at a price of $149.99, making it cheaper than its predecessor.
