The PS5 has Now Sold 50 Million Units Worldwide

In what is probably one of the most impressive – albeit unsurprising – feats in modern gaming history, Sony’s hugely-popular PlayStation 5 console has now passed a whopping 50 million units sold, outnumbering competitors like Microsoft’s Xbox series consoles, three to one.

Now in its fourth year since launch, Sony says that the PS5 is strongly expected to surpass sales of its predecessor, the PlayStation 4. With that in mind, the company is targeting to sell 25 million PS5 consoles in the current financial year, which ends on March 31, 2024. In a statement to the press, Senior VP at Sony Interactive Entertainment Eric Lempel comments:

“Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general we’re feeling very good about sales overall. We are still pushing really hard and I think we will have a record-breaking year no matter where we end up.

… We’ve done some good promotions this year. I will say we’ve done fewer promotions at this stage of the lifecycle than we ever have in the history of the company,”

A while back, Sony announced that it will be selling a newer and slimmer version of the PS5, which the company says is reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%, and will be sold starting at $450 for the digital edition. Sony’s video game business is among the company’s most profitable sectors, just next to its music division.
