No 10x zoom for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Usually whenever new flagship phones are released, the new hardware specs and features are built upon the existing ones, meaning that it either stays the same or we see an upgrade. It’s rare that we see companies take a step backwards, but apparently that’s what Samsung is doing.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is apparently going to drop the 10x periscope zoom from its camera lineup, according to a post on X by @Tech_Reve. Instead, the phone will come with a quad camera setup consisting of a 200MP main shooter, a 12MP ultrawide, and in the place of the 10x zoom, we’re getting two telephoto cameras – one will be a 50MP 5x zoom, and the other will be a 10MP 3x zoom.

Considering that Samsung used to make a huge deal about its smartphones’ zoom capabilities, it’s odd that Samsung could be dropping the 10x zoom in favor of two telephoto cameras, in which the combined zoom doesn’t even add up to 10. It will be interesting to see how Samsung spins this.

It is possible that they might rely heavily on software to achieve the same 10x zoom effect, so we’ll have to wait and see. The Galaxy S24 series is expected to launch in January 2024, so be sure to check back with us next month for the details.
