MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 is here and it is a MASSIVE upgrade!

Qualcomm pretty much dominates the chipset space when it comes to smartphones. MediaTek, on the other hand, has seen its chipsets used mostly in budget to mid-range devices, but the company has since announced its latest hardware in the form of the Dimensity 9300 that we think could give Qualcomm some pause.

The Dimensity 9300 is the latest chipset from MediaTek and it is their flagship chipset moving into 2024. It features an octa-core design that uses one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.25GHz, three Cortex-X4 cores clocked slightly slower at 2.85GHz, and four Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.0GHz.

While its predecessor, the Dimensity 9200, also featured an octa-core design, the majority use of the Cortex-X4 cores in the Dimensity 9300 is a massive upgrade. The GPU will also see an upgrade from the Arm Immortalis-G715 to the G720, which also features 12 cores and supports hardware ray-tracing.

Similar to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 will support AI features thanks to its use of the APU 790. According to MediaTek, this will allow handset makers to use on-device generative AI, meaning that OEMs can now run their AI on the phones itself instead of sending data to the cloud. This is faster and more secure in terms of privacy.

According to MediaTek, the APU 790 can run a 7 billion parameter LLM at 20 tokens per second, which can be further extended to 13 billion LLM with 16GB of RAM, so it will depend on the phone and the hardware the OEM chooses to pair with it. At this point it is unclear which OEMs will be making use of the Dimensity 9300, so we’ll have to wait until 2024 to find out.
