Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 could feature hardware that will trump the Apple Watch
There is a lot of attention being paid to the fabrication process for the chipsets used in our smartphones, with 2023 being the year where we’re starting to see more 3nm chipsets make their debut. But what about smartwatches? Turns out Samsung might use the same 3nm process for its 2024 wearables.
According to the report from Korean publication News Daily, they claim that Samsung could be using a new 3nm chipset for its Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra that are rumored to debut next year. If that’s true, it would be quite a massive upgrade over the Galaxy Watch 6 which still uses a chipset built on the 5nm process.
It would also allow Samsung to trump Apple’s wearables like the Apple Watch Series 9 that uses the S9 chipset, which is apparently built using the same tech as the A15 Bionic that debuted in the iPhone 13, meaning that it is a 5nm chipset. Why is this a big deal? Chips fabricated using a smaller fabrication process means that the transistors are more densely-packed, which in theory will allow them to be faster and also more energy efficient.
What’s also interesting is that apparently the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra will be the first Samsung products to use a 3nm chipset. Even the Galaxy S24 series, which is expected to launch in early 2024, will continue to rely on the 4nm process. As to what kind of real world gains can we expect from this, we suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.
