Sony’s no stranger to introducing slimmer, re-designed versions of its gaming consoles – we’ve seen it happen with the PlayStation One, PS2 Slim, and PSP Go, to name a few. With that in mind, it’s unsurprising then that the company recently announced an upcoming redesigned version of the PlayStation 5, which comes with a slimmer profile overall.
Inside, the new PS5 will come packed with 1TB storage for the PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, as well as the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for the Digital Edition. According to Sid Shuman, Senior Director for SIE Content Communications:
…our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.
Sony adds that the new PS5 model has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%.. This time around, there are four separate cover panels on the console, with a combination of matte and glossy panels. Buyers who purchase the PS5 Digital Edition can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive, which will be sold separately for $79.99.
In terms of pricing, the new PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be priced at $499.99, while the Digital Edition can be had for $449.99. Both models will be available beginning November this year.
