Today at Google’s launch event, the company announced their brand new Pixel 8 series of phones which consists of the base Pixel 8 model along with the larger and more powerful Pixel 8 Pro.
The handset will be made with a polished aluminum frame and will sport a matte back glass, a first for a Pixel Pro device. Google also points out how they have used recycled materials and have designed the phone to be more durable with its IP68 rating, making it more resistant to water and dust.
One of the main differences in terms of hardware would be its display. The Pixel 8 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch LTPO OLED display with a pixel density of 489 PPI, making it slightly more pixel dense compared to the Pixel 8. It also has a wider refresh rate range of 1Hz up to 120Hz, and can go up to 2,400 nits in peak brightness.
Under the hood, the Pixel 8 Pro will be powered by the same Tensor G3 chipset, but another difference over the Pixel 8 is that the Pro model will come with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM versus the 8GB of RAM on the Pixel 8. It will also be available up to 1TB of storage for those who need the extra space.
On the camera side of things, the Pixel 8 Pro will feature a triple camera setup consisting of a 50MP main shooter with 2x optical zoom, a 48MP ultrawide camera, and a 48MP telephoto camera that supports 5x optical zoom, along with multi-zone LDAF and optical and electronic image stabilization.
The use of the new Tensor G3 chipset has also introduced more complex machine learning functions, allowing more advanced image processing and also being able to erase distracting audio from your videos.
It also helps with features like being able to better detect and filter spam calls with Pixel Call Assist, and will feature a more realistic-sounding Assistant to help you answer calls when you’re too busy.
As for its battery life, the Pixel 8 Pro packs a 4,950mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging that will allow the phones to get from 0-50% in 30 minutes. There is also support for wireless charging but it does not appear that it will be using the new Qi2 standard.
Other features that users can look forward to include 7 years of OS, security, and Feature Drop updates and also access to VPN by Google One at no extra cost. The Pixel 8 Pro will not come cheap though, and it is priced starting at $999, a huge leap over its predecessor.
