Google’s Pixel phones will soon be able to show battery cycle count

Lithium-ion batteries have a limited number of cycles, and after a certain point, they start to lose their charge meaning that while your phone shows the battery percentage at 100%, in reality it might only be at 90% or lower, depending on how degraded your battery is.

On some laptops, you can actually find the cycle count of your battery, but on phones it’s not a very common feature, but that will change soon for Pixel owners. In the first beta of Android 14 QPR1 that was launched today, it seems that Pixel owners will be able to look forward to a new battery feature that shows the cycle count of their phone’s battery.

On some devices and platforms like iOS, Apple has included a battery health feature which shows the percentage of your phone’s battery health. This is similar, except a bit more precise since it shows the number of cycles your phone’s battery has gone through. This might be useful in determining if your phone’s battery could be having issues.

For example, if the number of cycles is relatively low but you’re no longer getting the same battery you were once getting, it could be a sign of a faulty battery. Alternatively, it can also be used as information given to potential buyers of your phone, where you can show that your phone has a relatively low number of cycles in order to ask for a higher price.
