Sony’s new app turns your phone into a wireless video monitor

0

Pretty much all cameras these days come with a screen on the back that allows users to see what they’re shooting. While the viewfinder works just fine, having an extra screen on the back lets users reach more interesting angles without having to hold their cameras up to their faces.

That being said, these screens are pretty small, which is why if you own a Sony camera, you might be interested to learn that Sony has announced a new mobile app called Monitor and Control that effectively turns your smartphone into a wireless video monitor.

There is a reason why whenever you see the behind-the-scenes of movies or TV shows, there are multiple monitors used. This is because having a larger display makes it easier for the director to see what’s in the frame, compared to the tiny screens on the back of cameras. Since our phones and tablets have considerably larger displays, this app makes perfect sense.

The app will show users detailed information like a waveform monitor, a false color display, and a histogram, and depending on your camera, it will also show precise exposure monitoring. From the app, users will also be able to control things like starting and stopping recording, making adjustments to white balance and ISO, and more.

Unfortunately, at the moment the app only works with cameras like the Sony FX6, FX3, and FX30 cinema cameras, and it is unclear if there are plans to eventually bring support to Sony’s other digital cameras like the A-series of mirrorless cameras, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
