WhatsApp users will soon be able to share full resolution media files
WhatsApp offers users an easy and convenient way to stay in touch with each other, but when it comes to media sharing, it’s not that great. Don’t get us wrong, it’s fine for sharing photos and videos with friends and family members, but if you need to send hi-res files for work purposes, it kind of sucks.
This is because WhatsApp compresses the heck out of media files, but that is expected to change soon. A recent report from WABetaInfo has revealed that WhatsApp is now allowing some beta users to access an upcoming feature that essentially lets them share files at full resolution.
According to the post, WhatsApp will soon let users send files that are up to 2GB in size. While we doubt many people will be sending videos and photos that large, 2GB is more than plenty if you want to share photos taken using your phone’s camera sensor at its max resolution, or if you’re trying to share images taken by a DSLR or mirrorless camera.
WhatsApp had previously allowed users to increase the quality of the files sent, but it was still compressed to a certain degree, but this change should essentially remove those limits. That being said, we do have some concerns regarding piracy where the 2GB limit could in theory let users share pirated movies with each other, so we’re not sure if WhatsApp has any safeguards in place to prevent that from happening.
