These days, it’s not uncommon to find phones supporting eSIM. For example, Apple’s iPhones come with support for dual SIM technology, but one SIM will be a physical slot while the other is eSIM.
It was previously rumored that for Google’s Pixel 8 series, the company could be going all-in with eSIM, but now it seems that will not be the case. According to 9to5Google’s sources, they claim that the Pixel 8 will not be going full eSIM mode and is expected to continue to maintain its physical SIM card slot.
Is this a big deal? We suppose it depends on how you look at it. Removing the physical SIM card slot means freeing up more space inside the phone which could be used to add new hardware features or expand its battery size. But since most of us grew up with physical SIMs, we’re already used to the idea so it might not be that big of a deal.
The Pixel 7 already supports physical SIMs and eSIMs, so if you do prefer the eSIM route, the Pixel 8 should at the very least maintain those options. Google has recently confirmed that the Pixel 8 event will be taking place this October, so we should have more details next month.
