Getting a Google Pixel phone just got a lot more compelling
If there is one thing Apple does right with its iPhones and iPads, it would be with software updates. The company usually supports its products for far longer than the average Android handset maker, but now it looks like Google could be catching up.
According to a recent report from 9to5Google, it seems that Google could be looking to offer its Pixel phones powered by its Tensor chipsets with up to five years of software updates. This would be longer than what Google currently offers, which is three years, and longer than Samsung, who offers four years of updates.
It would also essentially put Google on par with Apple, where Apple’s iPhone XS, which was released in 2018 with iOS 12, is still eligible to receive the upcoming iOS 17 update, which is five years worth of updates. This is great news for would-be Pixel owners who don’t plan on buying a new phone every couple of years.
In a way this makes sense. Since Google pretty much controls Android and with its Tensor chipsets, Google would have a greater say in its software with regards to compatibility and optimization. So, if you are thinking of buying a new Android phone and if software updates are important to you, maybe your next phone should be a Google Pixel handset.
