YouTube testing using AI to summarize videos for you

On YouTube, a video’s title is meant to give you an idea of what you’re about to watch. Unfortunately, not all video titles are necessarily helpful. To entice viewers to click their videos, sometimes creators come up with titles that are attention grabbing but don’t actually tell you what it’s about until you watch it.

This can be annoying, but that might not be an issue in the future. YouTube has announced that as part of an experiment/test, they will be incorporating the use of AI to help generate summaries for users on the video they plan to watch. This means that you can get an idea of what it’s really about before deciding if you want to dedicate the next few minutes of your day to watching it.

“We’re starting to test AI auto-generated summaries on YouTube, so that it’s easier for you to read a quick summary about a video and decide whether it’s the right fit for you. To begin with, you may see these summaries on watch and search pages. While we hope these summaries are helpful and give you a quick overview of what a video is about, they do not replace video descriptions (which are written by creators!).”

It’s an interesting feature because it means that the AI will be able to “watch” the video and understand its content and be able to write up a summary based on what it has “seen”. Since this is an experiment, not all videos or users will be able to see it in action, but presumably if all goes well, it might become a mainstay feature in the future.
