If you’re not a fan of Netflix’s ad-supported tier, then the cheapest subscription option you had is $9.99 a month. We say “had” because it looks like if you live in the US or the UK, Netflix has decided to ax its Basic ad-free tier.
Prior to this, Netflix had four tiers for users to choose from. There was the Standard with Ads tier, the Basic tier, Standard tier, and the Premium tier, but now with the removal of Basic, users only have three options to choose from.
In terms of cost, it means that users will have to pay about $5 more a month for the cheapest ad-free tier, which is Standard, at $15.49 a month. The good news is that if you’re already subscribed to Netflix Basic, you can keep subscribing as long as you don’t let the payment lapse.
These changes only apply to those who have either previously canceled their subscription and want to come back, or those who are new to Netflix. These changes were originally spotted back in June where only Netflix Canada was affected, but now it looks like those in the US and UK will be affected as well.
We’re not sure if there are plans to expand this change to other regions so we’ll have to wait and see, so in the meantime if you are still subscribed to Netflix Basic, you might want to consider holding onto it unless you really have a need to stream at a higher quality or watch it from more than one device simultaneously.
