TikTok just launched its own music streaming service

Social media is a tool meant to aid discovery and help people find new things like new music to listen to, new movies and TV shows to watch, new products, and so on, and TikTok actually does an excellent job at that.

By combining music with fun dance trends, the company has actually made music discovery fun again, so much so that we can’t say we’re too surprised to learn that TikTok is now launching its own music streaming service, where presumably they’re hoping to take on the likes of Apple Music and Spotify.

Before you get too excited, note that right now the service, called TikTok Music, is only available in Brazil and Indonesia. It offers features you might expect from other services, like personalized music recommendations, real-time lyrics, collaborative playlists, and more. There’s even a built-in feature similar to Shazam that helps you identify songs you’re hearing in public.

TikTok Music is a subscription-based service which is actually a great way for the company to earn money in a different way. It is priced at around $3.49 a month with prices differing slightly between Brazil and Indonesia due to the currency, but it’s roughly around the $3 mark.

When asked by TechCrunch if there are plans to bring the service to the US, TikTok says they don’t have any plans to share at the moment. Perhaps they want to see how well-received the service is before deciding if they want to expand on it, so those of us in the US and other parts of the world will just have to wait.
