Nokia Enters into 5G Partnership with Apple

Occasional team-ups between major tech companies aren’t exactly uncommon – whether it be smartphone OEMs and camera manufacturers, or satellite messaging technology, we’ve seen a lot of hardware, software, and patents sprout from unlikely collaborations among different tech companies.

With that in mind, Nokia and Apple have recently entered into a long-term patent licence agreement, which will see Apple handling 5G and other communication technologies. This refreshed team-up comes ahead of the expiry of a current agreement between the two companies, which is set to end later this year.

Nokia kept mum on the specifics regarding the terms of the partnership however – the Finnish telecommunication giant simply stated that it is due to receive payments from Apple for several years down the line. Nokia adds that it expects this new agreement to yield revenue starting from January 2024.

Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, describes the deal with Apple was “amicable,” adding that it “reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investment in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies”. Since 2000, Nokia has invested more than €140 billion on R&D resulting in thousands of patents, 5,500 of which are described as “essential” to 5G.
