Qualcomm will power Sony’s Xperia smartphones for the foreseeable future
Qualcomm is one of the largest chipset manufacturers in the world. The company’s Snapdragon chips power a vast majority of Android phones out there, and they have also extended their portfolio to cover devices like wearables and even cars.
That being said, Qualcomm has since announced that they have entered into a new collaboration agreement with Sony, where it will see Sony’s Xperia phones continue to use Qualcomm’s chipsets for the foreseeable future. The exact details of the new deal is unclear, but this is obviously a win for Qualcomm.
This is because while Qualcomm is still more or less the leader on the chipset front, other manufacturers have been on the rise. For example, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 series of chipsets have started to prove that they can compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon lineup. Samsung is also rumored to be working on a new series of chipsets that could be exclusively used for the company’s future flagship phones.
By signing a deal with Sony, it at the very least ensures that Qualcomm will retain some of their market share in the future.
Qualcomm is expected to announce their next-gen flagship chipset in October later this year that will come in the form of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. While typically reserved for the following year, there have been rumors suggesting that companies like Xiaomi and maybe OnePlus could actually utilize in their phones launching in the later part of 2023.
