Google’s Chromecast devices have come a long way in terms of improved functionality and features over the years, providing users with much-welcome updates. As with any other consumer electronic device however, Chromecasts aren’t exempt from obsoletion, and at some point is is expected that Google will eventually have to cease support for older devices.
This is the case with the first-generation Chromecast, which was reported to have received its final update a while back. More specifically, the last update for the device was released back in November 2022, with firmware version number 1.36.159268.
Meanwhile, Google did post a more recent update back in April this year, stating that “Support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended, which means these devices no longer receive software or security updates.” The notice adds that Google no longer provides technical support, and users might notice a change in performance.
The first-generation Chromecast was launched back in 2013, and featured a rather different design to the more rounded look that we’ve seen on recent Chromecast devices. With that being said, you might want (or need to) upgrade to a newer model if you’re still rocking the first-gen Chromecast.
