Right now the only way to add someone to your contact as a WhatsApp contact would be through a phone number. This is versus other messaging apps where you have the option of adding that person through a username, which might be better in terms of privacy, especially if you don’t want to give out your number.
That being said, we might have some good news on that front. According to WABetaInfo’s latest report, it appears that in the recent WhatsApp beta, the publication spotted the option for users to add a unique username to their account.
Keep in mind that this is different from the current name that WhatsApp lets you set, which is more for identifying yourself when you message other people. While WhatsApp does not explicitly state what this username could be used for, the fact that WhatsApp is asking for users to pick a unique name suggests that it could be used to add people to your contacts in the future.
This will make it a lot easier for people to add contacts to WhatsApp without having to create a new contact and saving their number. It will also be useful for businesses who might now be more easily discoverable on WhatsApp through a username instead of a phone number. There is no mention of when this change will be rolling out, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled.
